This 2023 'Estate Red' Paseante Noir marks a high point for The Ojai Vineyard's own estate-bred grape. Ripe, dense aromatics show berry pie, black cherry, mocha, and a rooty spice, joined for the first time by a gamey, Syrah-like edge. On the palate, rich dark fruit gives way to a brighter register of tobacco, cedar, and a whisper of brine, framed by fine, well-managed tannins. Extended aging on the lees without early sulfur additions lends the wine a silky texture and vibrant freshness. Full-bodied and powerful, yet polished throughout.

Varietals: Paseante Noir, a Pierce's Disease-resistant grape developed by The Ojai Vineyard with UC Davis, roughly 50% Zinfandel, 25% Petite Sirah, and 12.5% Cabernet Sauvignon in parentage.

Dunnuck called this the finest vintage of the cuvée he's tasted, citing notes of redcurrant, black cherry, and peppery herbs with a concentrated, textured mouthfeel and a great finish. Recommended drinking window 2025–2035.

2023 was an unusually mild, extended growing season even by Ojai standards, and this fruit was picked five to six weeks later than usual, in mid-October, from the estate's own vineyard in Oak View. Fermented with a portion of whole clusters using native yeast, the wine aged 18 months in neutral French oak on its lees, bottled without fining, filtration, or added sulfur until the very end. The estate vineyard is farmed strictly organically, on a modern, densely spaced planting designed for precise canopy management and even ripening.

The Ojai Vineyard has been crafting elegant, cool-climate wines in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties since 1983, when winemaker Adam Tolmach set out to prioritize balance and pure terroir expression over power and extraction.

Wine is an amazing gift! However, due to the nature of regulations, it does come with some additional risks and costs. We have put together this brief FAQ so you can make sure that a wine gift is the best fit.

The basics?

You and your recipient must be over 21.

Are there any costs associated with shipping wine? 

There is a $6 adult signature fee on all wine shipments and this is reflected in your shipping cost, calculated at check-out. 

In addition, for some shipments USPS Priority Mail might be a more affordable shipping method (especially within California, or near states). Wine cannot ship USPS, so you will not be given this option at check-out. 

Are there any risks in shipping wine?

It is the customer's responsibility to provide an address where someone 21+ will be available to sign for the shipment. Shipping carriers will make a few attempts, and if no one is home, the recipient will be given the opportunity to pick up the gift from a Fedex location. If they do not pick it up within the designated window, it will be returned to us. We cannot offer refunds on any perishable items that are returned to us. To maintain the highest quality, we cannot restock wine in most cases. We can refund items that can be restocked as store credit. Shipping charges are not refundable.  

Where can wine be shipped?

We can deliver wine to homes, offices and hotels in the Santa Barbara area and can ship to all states except Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Kentucky, Mississippi, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Dakota & Utah.

We strongly recommend that you provide a valid phone number for your recipient, provided in the Shipping Information at check-out. They may be contacted by Fedex or our courier in case of delivery issues or to arrange for a convenient delivery time.
